Design Principles

  • Using waterfall for energy
  • Grouping of spaces under one building
  • One space building that is open to the building
  • Well ventilated with air circulation in mind (elevated off the ground and on a slope)
  • Research on how much water is used by 5 people
  • Research on average rainfall
  • Design with open external spaces for ventilation and water catchment
  • Research on materials used e.g. mud brick and light weight material which is locally available
  • Tradition and history of architecture of the site

Concept rules/guidelines

A couple of concepts that our team wants to abide by in order to create our design.
- "everything should have multiple functions"
minimising the environmental impact of our design
- "Let nature do the work for you"
Such as in the hundertwasser design, incorporating nature into the design to perform the functions of man made appliances.

- Think outside the square... We are in 2ND year architecture, why not have a crack of something a little obscure, seeing we will probably never get the opportunity in the future.

Brain-storming (material ideas)

A wide and wonderful list of 'different' materials that can be used in our design. Looking at the use of recycled materials and also original designs.
- Wine bottles
- Cans, tins
- Canvas/flexible and adaptible materials
- Books and paper
- Wire
- Old barrels
- Sand bags
- Natural living materials (trees, vines, creepers)

MINIMA INITAL DESIGN TO FINAL CONCEPT

3 thumbnail drawing.

playing with light and forms in repetition

exploring space saving techniques

bathroom idea and more space saving ideas

a more in-depth description about my bathroom idea which would later shape the rest of my pod.

exploring ideas with light and blow-up walls and roofs.

a quick sketch of my overalldesign

the 3 stage process in opperating my pod which is
outlined below in more detail.

area 1. sleeping space and study space can be used. toilet opened. basin over the toilet.

area 2. in the process of changing the spaces. If more people come over for dinner. the kitchen bench which is sliding out from under the bed, can be used as a table with people sitting on each side. The basin is now moving away from the toilet as the door is closing with the kithen bench that is sliding.

the desk has been folded down and the kitchen pushed all the way the the wall against the collapsed desk. from here the sink for cooking - which is also the basin in the wet area - can be accessed by a swing opening above the basin in the wall of the bathroom.
The bathroom is also fully closed now and the basin is well clear of the toilet allowing enough space to take a S#*! while providing adequate space for showering.

Here is a section of showing the study space and the sleeping area with the bathroom door open.

Finally a view of the pod as it stands above the platform space so it will not obstruct the view that other students enjoy. The roof of it extends into the gallery above but there is still plenty of room to see over the structure. The I-beam that the pod sits on extends below the platform and held in place by cables as well as mounting to the wall of the building.

[ MINIMA : PROJECT TWO ]

the site

Above the main entrance facing the waterfront. it was not accessable as its only a platform to protect the entry point below. this made getting to the structure a challenge as well as not obstructing the view from other students. the view from our site is another bonus with emphasis on the refuge and outlook concepts.
